1756-ENBT Security Advisory: Can It Be Replaced by 1756-EN2T or 1756-EN4TR?
All 1756-ENBT firmware versions are affected by CVE-2026-84235, and no corrected firmware is available. The practical question is not only which module to buy, but how the new module changes the Studio 5000 project, IP plan, I/O ownership and EtherNet/IP topology.
Why the 1756-ENBT Needs a Planned Migration
Rockwell Automation reports that a specially crafted CIP packet can crash the affected 1756-ENBT module and require a restart for recovery. The issue affects every firmware version, and the advisory does not list a corrected ENBT firmware release.
The lifecycle issue is separate but equally important. Rockwell lists the 1756-ENBT as discontinued and identifies the 1756-EN2T as its functional replacement. The installed module therefore presents both a cybersecurity exposure and a long-term lifecycle dependency.
Compare the Installed Module and Two Upgrade Paths
Open one module at a time to compare its engineering role. The 1756-EN2T is closer to the original single-port arrangement; the 1756-EN4TR is a broader network-modernization option.
1756-ENBT Discontinued Installed-base bridge module 1 × 10/100
Retain only as a controlled transition where immediate shutdown is not possible. No corrected firmware is listed for CVE-2026-84235.
1756-EN2T Upgrade path Closer single-port functional replacement 1 × 10/100
Often the first option to assess when the existing application uses one Ethernet port, does not require DLR and has a moderate connection load.
1756-EN4TR Upgrade path Performance and topology modernization 2 × 10/100/1000
Evaluate when the project needs dual ports, DLR, 1 Gbps links, more connections, CIP Security capabilities or a broader controller and network update.
Six Questions That Define the Real Scope of the Upgrade
Q01 Can the 1756-ENBT and 1756-EN4TR be installed in the same 1756 chassis? Conditionally yes
They are both chassis-mounted 1756 modules and can occupy different slots in a compatible ControlLogix chassis. Confirm the available slot, power budget, thermal load, controller firmware and application rules before installation.
Redundancy systems require additional care. Rockwell specifies enhanced communication modules such as the 1756-EN2T or 1756-EN4TR and does not permit the standard 1756-ENBT for the redundancy network.
Q02 Can the original IP address be retained? Usually
The original address can often be assigned to the replacement after the ENBT is disconnected. The address does not transfer automatically. Verify the subnet, gateway, VLAN, NAT, switch port and firewall rules, and prevent any temporary duplicate IP condition.
Q03 Does the Studio 5000 I/O tree need to change? Yes — review
The target catalog number, series and firmware must be represented correctly in the project. Audit remote I/O ownership, MSG paths, produced and consumed tags, HMI and OPC paths, Electronic Keying, unicast or multicast settings and module-fault logic.
Reusing the original IP address does not eliminate the need to validate the project configuration.
Q04 Must Studio 5000 or controller firmware be upgraded? Check the matrix
Not in every project. The answer depends on the target module series and firmware, controller type, redundancy mode, safety functions, motion requirements and the installed Add-On Profile. Confirm the exact combination in Rockwell's Product Compatibility and Download Center before ordering or scheduling downtime.
Q05 Does a dual-port 1756-EN4TR force a topology change? No
The module can remain in a star network through one port. Using both ports for a linear network or DLR is a separate design decision that requires cabling, node order, supervisor, network-mode, device-capability and recovery testing.
Do not connect both ports arbitrarily to the same switched network; an incorrect design can create a loop or conflict with the selected network mode.
Q06 Does the larger EN4TR connection capacity change the existing design? Recalculate load
Capacity alone does not break the existing design, but the migration should recalculate I/O connections, explicit messages, produced and consumed tags, HMI and historian clients, motion axes, RPI values, packet rate, controller load and switch uplinks.
A 1 Gbps module does not make a complete path operate at 1 Gbps when other devices and links remain limited to 100 Mbps.
A Controlled 1756-ENBT Migration Runbook
Capture the installed system
Record the ENBT catalog, series, firmware, chassis slot, power supply, controller, software release, IP plan, I/O tree, MSG paths, clients and physical topology.
Select the engineering path
Choose EN2T for a lower-change single-port migration or assess EN4TR where dual ports, DLR, Gigabit links or higher capacity provide a justified benefit.
Verify the compatibility combination
Check module series, target firmware, Studio 5000 version, AOP, EDS, controller firmware and any redundancy, safety or motion restrictions.
Prepare and test offline
Retain the original ACD backup, work in a project copy and bench-test with a non-conflicting temporary IP address before the scheduled production cutover.
Validate operation and recovery
Confirm remote I/O, module faults, MSG traffic, HMI, historian, produced and consumed tags, alarms, interlocks, network recovery and the final project backup.
Recommended ControlLogix EtherNet/IP Models
Use the left and right arrows to review the installed-base model and two migration candidates. Each product button opens the exact product detail page rather than a search-results page.
Model selection remains subject to chassis, controller, firmware, software, topology and application verification.
When Can ENBT Remain Temporarily, and When Should It Be Upgraded?
Temporary controlled retention
- No immediate production shutdown is available.
- The software and firmware combination still requires validation.
- Remote I/O, HMI and messaging paths are not fully documented.
- The DLR or EN4TR topology design is still incomplete.
- Hardware, backup and rollback preparation is underway.
Prioritize a planned upgrade
- The module is reachable from unnecessary or untrusted segments.
- It carries critical I/O, interlock or production communication.
- The plant is modernizing control or cybersecurity architecture.
- DLR, 1 Gbps links or greater connection capacity is required.
- The system uses redundancy, safety or high availability.

Is the 1756-EN2T a direct plug-and-play replacement for the 1756-ENBT?
No. Rockwell lists it as a functional replacement, but the target module definition, firmware, IP configuration, I/O tree and communication paths still require verification.
Should every 1756-ENBT be replaced by a 1756-EN4TR?
No. EN4TR is appropriate when its dual ports, DLR, Gigabit communication, capacity or security functions support the project requirements. A single-port EN2T may produce a smaller migration scope.
Can the same production IP address be used after replacement?
Often yes, but only after the old module is disconnected and duplicate-address, subnet, gateway, NAT, firewall and client-path checks are complete.
Does Gigabit capability guarantee a faster control network?
No. End-to-end performance remains limited by every device, switch, link, RPI setting and traffic pattern in the communication path.
