Product FAQ
Q:The armored cable on this probe is slightly twisted along its length from factory packaging. Do we need to untwist it before installation, and can we straighten it by hand?
Q:We installed this armored probe in a pump. The vibration readings are acceptable, but we notice a constant, low-level high-frequency noise (e.g., above 5 kHz) on the signal that wasn't present with the old unarmored probe. Could the armor be causing this?
A: Light twisting from packaging is normal and generally not a problem. You should gently straighten the cable by hand along its natural lay to make installation easier and avoid putting twist into the mounted probe.
Do NOT use tools to grip and untwist, as this could damage the armor or the internal cable.
Do NOT apply excessive force. The cable should straighten easily. If there is a severe, persistent twist or kink, it may indicate damage, and the probe should be inspected before use.
Goal: The cable should have a smooth, natural curve without helical spirals before you secure it in place with clamps.
A: It is unlikely the armor itself is generating electrical noise. The armor is electrically connected to the cable shield and is grounded. However, the installation of the armored probe might have changed the grounding path or introduced a ground loop. More likely causes:
Differences in Cable Routing: The new armored cable may be routed closer to sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI) like motor leads or variable frequency drives (VFDs).
Connector Integrity: Ensure the ClickLoc connection between the probe and extension cable is clean, dry, and fully seated (audible click).
Armor Grounding: Verify the armor is properly grounded at the Proximitor end and not creating a new, noisy ground path compared to the old installation.
Shield Termination: Check that the shield drain wire in the field wiring is properly terminated.
Try temporarily rerouting the cable away from potential noise sources to see if the noise diminishes.
